Starbucks Leadership experience

Scroll for the case study.

overview

Starbucks was bringing franchise partners from all over the USA and the World to Chicago and wanted to reproduce the original Starbucks (y’know, the one in Seattle) experience.

Touch aimed to help people coming from around the world to experience Starbucks’ Leadership Experience to understand the horticulture, the interconnected international systems and the love and care that Starbucks has for the coffee and for Seattle. The desire was to show where they came from. So we decided to bring that to Chicago.

Using a LIDAR scanner and a mountain of photos - I reproduced, down to the studs, everything about the first Starbucks. Where things were, relative sizes, recreated and reproducing typefaces that don’t exist digitally (I even got to forge Howard Schulz’s signature). While it was quite the undertaking. The final result was breathtaking.

In order to recreate the feeling of Pike Place and the original Starbucks - and to allow for the sheer number of attendees at the conference, we created two copies of the original stores in the space.

Big data . like, physically big.

Part of my responsibility was to visualize data about the sheer scale of Starbucks operation. This included using actual bags of beans as unit in physical, experiential graphs. This included a walkable Experience Hall that taught attendees about the Starbucks timeline, the uniform program, and their partnership ASU as an educational benefit for their staff.

The photos below speak to Starbucks’ partnership with ASU and a timeline of its adoption.

As part of the Seattle Experience we also built out iconic areas of Pike Place, including the neons, art installations and the fish throwers section.
